Case Study: SkoolPool: A Facebook app for PSE applicants
On May 24, 2007, Facebook Inc. announced a new public API (Application Programming Interface) that would allow external parties to develop applications that would run on the popular social networking site.
In September 2006, Facebook opened its network to the public and saw its user base double to 14 million by May 2007. Academica Group (and the world) recognized the potential of Facebook, and social networking technologies in general, and set about exploring the ways our clients could get involved effectively.
Our annual survey of applicants reveals year after year that the college and university application process is one of the most complex, intangible and personal decisions that a student will face. We also know that peer opinion is one of the most trusted and sought after sources of information during this process.
Academica Group decided to help students (and schools) harness the power of social networking and peer opinion by creating a Facebook application that would follow students through the application process, and facilitate discussion between peers each step of the way.
Academica Group's technology and e-community specialists have pioneered a dynamic application designed for applicants to post-secondary institutions worldwide. SkoolPool allows students to keep an up-to-date display of the schools they are considering, right on their Facebook profile. SkoolPool helps students organize their school decision, and shares their thoughts and decisions with friends that are Facebook members.
