Newfoundland and Labrador Education Minister Joan Burke spoke to media Tuesday following reports Premier Danny Williams rejected a candidate for Memorial University's presidency. Burke said it was she who vetoed 2 applicants, and the province is invested in a meticulous search in order to strengthen MUN's reputation and global standing. Students and faculty say government involvement will do more harm than good, weakening MUN's academic reputation. There's also worry that political input may dissuade candidates from wanting the job.
